One of eight cities in the world named for Sir Henry Havelock, a British Officer who distinguished himself in 1857 during the "Indian Mutiny. Originally named Havelock Station in the 1850 when the Atlantic and North Carolina railroad built a depot where the right-of-way crosses Miller Blvd.
The Union Troops lauched their invasion of New Bern and Fort Macon from Havelock Station in 1862 and had very few positive comments about Havelock Station with "Chain Lightning Whiskey" readily available from local farms and stores being one of the few exceptions.
The majority of Havelock's population was farmers, but the production of Naval Supplies such as tar and turpentine became a significant contributor to the economy in the 19th century. With the advent of the steam engine, the requirement for naval supplies diminished. Stills were then turned to the production of moonshine to make up for lost revenue of the naval stores.
Havelock welcomed the United States Marine Corps in 1940.
